BENEFITS OF CLINICAL COUNSELLING

Clinical counselling offers several benefits that can significantly improve a person’s mental health and overall well-being. Some of these benefits include:

  • Emotional Support: Clinical counsellors provide a safe and confidential space for individuals to express their thoughts and feelings without judgment. This emotional support can be crucial for managing stress, anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues.
  • Skill Development: Counsellors often teach coping skills, problem-solving techniques, and communication strategies that empower clients to handle life’s challenges more effectively. These skills can improve resilience and foster personal growth.
  • Behavioural Change: Through counseling, individuals can identify harmful patterns of behavior and work towards changing them. This can include addressing addictions, improving relationships, or adopting healthier lifestyle choices.
  • Increased Self-Awareness: Counseling encourages self-reflection and introspection, helping individuals gain deeper insights into their own thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This self-awareness is crucial for personal development and making positive life changes.
  • Improved Relationships: Counseling can enhance communication and conflict resolution skills, which can lead to healthier and more fulfilling relationships with family, friends, and colleagues.
  • Symptom Reduction: For those experiencing symptoms of mental health disorders such as depression or anxiety, clinical counseling can help alleviate these symptoms through various therapeutic techniques and interventions.
  • Crisis Management: Counselors are trained to provide support during times of crisis or trauma. They can help individuals navigate difficult situations, process emotions, and develop coping strategies to regain stability.
  • Goal Setting: Counseling often involves setting specific, achievable goals for personal or professional growth. Working towards these goals with the support of a counselor can increase motivation and provide a sense of direction.
  • Long-term Benefits: The skills and insights gained through counseling can have lasting effects beyond the counseling sessions themselves. Individuals often report improved self-esteem, better stress management, and a greater sense of fulfillment in their lives.

RITA FUNG

MC, RCC (SHE/HER/HERS)

Rita is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (#3402) with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors and holds a Master of Counselling from Trinity Western University. She has always been fascinated by the human mind and behavior, and she has a deep love for music. This passion led her on a journey to complete a Bachelor of Arts with a Psychology Major and Music Minor at the University of British Columbia. After physically recovering from a significant car accident during her undergraduate years, she experienced firsthand the incredible potential for growth and healing, inspiring her to share this experience with others.

Since 2004, Rita has worked with children and adults in both community and clinic settings, providing support and treatment for those navigating life's challenges, including individuals impacted by physical injuries, mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, grief and loss, workplace stress, burnout, and neurodivergence.

Through her experience as a counsellor, she recognizes that each person possesses unique abilities, characteristics, strengths, needs, and goals. As a result, she integrates various theoretical approaches and modalities to support each client’s development of resources, capacity, and resilience in their journey of life and recovery. Her primary focus is on fostering self-compassion and a mind-body connection by exploring emotional and physiological experiences, as well as core beliefs formed within family and cultural contexts.

Rita incorporates concepts and techniques from interpersonal neurobiology, polyvagal theory, attachment theory, emotionally focused therapy (EFT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), internal family systems (IFS)/parts model, somatic experiencing (SE), and sensorimotor psychotherapy. She has completed EMDR Basic Training (EMDRIA Approved), earned the Certified Clinical Trauma Professional Certification, and obtained a Certificate in Foundations of Play Therapy. Rita believes in the power of creativity and expressive arts—such as visual art, music, dance/movement, creative writing, and sandplay—in the therapeutic process, offering clients the option to incorporate these modalities into their counselling experience, regardless of skill level.
