Dietetics

Dietietics is the science and practice of translating the principles of nutrition into tailored dietary plans to promote health and manage disease. Registered dietitians (R.D.) are regulated health professionals who use their expertise in food and nutrition to enhance the lives and improve the health of Canadians.

By using the science of nutrition, dieititians help people understand the connection between food and health, and provide personalized guidance to meet their needs and goals. Dietitians are trained to use the most up-to-date science and translate it into practical guidance that you can use to make nutritious food choices that are right for you.

DIETITIAN FAQS

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A DIETITIAN AND A NUTRITIONIST?

The title “dietitian” or “registered dietitian” is protected by the law across Canada. This means only people who meet certain criteria and standards are allowed to use this title. In British Columbia, all dietitians must be registered under the College of Dietitians of British Columbia (CDBC). The title “nutritionist” is not protected in BC, therefore it’s not regulated and anybody can call themselves a nutritionist in the province without proper training.

ARE DIETITIAN SERVICES COVERED THROUGH EXTENDED HEALTHCARE PLANS?

Most extended healthcare plans will provide partial or full extended health coverage for Registered Dietitian services. However, plans can vary and we encourage you to verify these details with your insurance provider.

HOW MANY VISITS DO I NEED?

The first visit will be an 1 hour initial assessment with the dietitian. This session will be used to understand your goals, objectives and concerns, and evaluate your current dietary and lifestyle habits. The dietitian then can create a plan with you and set goals to help achieve your objectives.

Follow-up visits are 30 minutes, and will depend on the plan that your dietitian creates with you. Every person is different, and the number of follow-up visits will vary from person to person.

WHAT CAN I DISCUSS DURING A FREE PHONE CONSULTATION?

During your 15 minute free phone consultation:

  • We will outline the process of what working with a registered dietitian looks like.
  • We can briefly discuss your specific nutrition, health and wellness goals and needs to help decide if the practitioner is a good fit.
  • Explain how billing and pricing work.
  • Answer any other questions.
