THE SHORT ANSWER

What is burnout counselling?

Burnout counselling is support for people whose long-term work stress has left them exhausted, distant from their job or less effective at it. The World Health Organization describes burn-out as a syndrome resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It lists burn-out as an occupational phenomenon and does not classify it as a medical condition. You do not need a diagnosis to start counselling.

Alexandra Cope at Richmond and Rita Fung at North Burnaby both list burnout in their own profiles, and Rita also lists workplace stress.

WHAT IT IS

The WHO describes three parts of burn-out

The World Health Organization's ICD-11 describes burn-out by three dimensions. The first is feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion. The second is increased mental distance from your job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism about it. The third is reduced professional efficacy. The WHO says the term refers specifically to the workplace and should not be applied to experiences in other areas of life.

IN THE ROOM

Counselling starts with your work week as it is now

Your counsellor asks what your work week looks like, what has changed and what you want to be different. Alexandra Cope's profile lists person-centred work with mindfulness and CBT interventions. Rita Fung's profile describes a focus on self-compassion and the mind-body connection. Choose by travel and schedule, and your counsellor adjusts the approach to what you bring in.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

See a doctor if low mood or poor sleep goes on

Low mood that lasts, loss of interest in what you enjoy, or sleep that stays poor are reasons to see your family doctor as well as a counsellor. Call 9-1-1 in an emergency, call 8-1-1 for health advice that is not an emergency, or call the BC crisis line, 310-6789, open 24 hours a day.
