CHRONIC PAIN GUIDE · COORDINATION

One plan, more than one professional.

How we coordinate physiotherapy, massage, kinesiology, acupuncture and counselling when chronic pain needs more than one angle.

THE SHORT ANSWER

What is multidisciplinary chronic pain care?

Multidisciplinary care means more than one profession works together on the same plan for the same patient. For chronic pain this is physiotherapy as the lead, with registered massage therapy, kinesiology, acupuncture, IMS or counselling added where they contribute. The 2021 NICE guideline for chronic primary pain supports combining supervised exercise with psychological therapy and other evidence-based options, which is the shape of a multidisciplinary plan at Launch Rehab.

Chronic pain is a problem with more than one input: tissue, nervous system, sleep, mood, workload and life context. Treating it with one profession alone works some of the time and leaves gaps the rest. Launch Rehab has physiotherapy, chiropractic, RMT, kinesiology, acupuncture, IMS and counselling under one roof. The multidisciplinary plan uses that: physiotherapy owns the arc of the plan, and the other professions join where they are useful rather than as a standing menu.

WHEN TO ADD

When one profession is not enough

A multidisciplinary plan is not every patient's plan. For some people, straightforward physiotherapy is all that is needed, and adding more clinicians just complicates the schedule. The signal to coordinate is a flat response to six to eight physiotherapy visits, or clear signs that pain is also affecting sleep, mood or the capacity to work. At that point the question is not 'who else can I see', it is 'what specifically is the second professional going to do that physiotherapy alone has not'.

COMMON COMBINATIONS

Who is added to a chronic pain plan, and why

The most common additions, and the reason each is added:

  • RMT: to settle an irritable system between activity progressions, especially when muscle guarding has become chronic.
  • Kinesiology: to extend active rehab into a longer, structured programme once physiotherapy visits are reducing, with WorkSafeBC often funding this phase.
  • Acupuncture or IMS: for pain modulation when hands-on work and exercise are not quite reaching, delivered by a registered acupuncturist or an IMS-certified physiotherapist.
  • Counselling: when pain is clearly interacting with sleep, mood or work, delivered at Richmond or North Burnaby by Registered Clinical Counsellors.
  • Chiropractic: when a patient prefers chiropractic for manual care alongside the active rehab plan.

HOW IT IS COORDINATED

Clinicians talk to each other, with your consent

Each session is scheduled and billed separately, and each clinician writes their own note. What makes it multidisciplinary rather than parallel is that the clinicians share updates on your plan with your written consent, under the privacy policies on the Launch Rehab site. Your physiotherapist usually keeps the master plan and will tell you what the next step is after each visit, even when the next step is with a different professional.

FAQ

Common questions.

Your physiotherapist does. Chronic pain care at Launch Rehab is physiotherapy-led: the physiotherapist keeps the arc of the plan, and recommends when and why to add RMT, kinesiology, acupuncture, IMS or counselling. All five studios (Lougheed, Coquitlam, Richmond, New Westminster and North Burnaby) run under this model. Each studio has its own roster, so the exact mix of professions on site varies by location.
