MLD GUIDE · PRACTICAL
Lymphatic drainage cost and insurance coverage in BC.
MLD bills as registered massage therapy, which unlocks extended health benefits, ICBC pre-approval and, for some, MSP. Here is the whole money picture, with sources.

THE SHORT ANSWER
How much does lymphatic drainage cost, and does insurance cover it?
Manual lymphatic drainage at Launch Rehab is billed as registered massage therapy. As of April 1, 2026, RMT sessions cost $120 for 45 minutes, $145 for 60, $165 for 75 and $185 for 90, GST included. Most BC extended health plans cover it under their massage therapy benefit, ICBC pre-approves 12 RMT sessions in the first 12 weeks after a crash, and MSP contributes only through income-tested supplementary benefits.
The money question deserves a straight answer, not a call-us page. MLD at Launch Rehab is delivered by a registered massage therapist (RMT), which means it is priced and insured exactly like massage therapy in BC. That single fact unlocks most of what follows: extended health massage benefits apply, ICBC pre-approval applies after a crash, and MSP applies only in narrow, income-tested cases.
Every figure on this page has a source: our own rate card, ICBC's published treatment table, or the BC government's MSP pages, each linked at the bottom with the date we checked it. Prices and insurer rules change, so where a number could drift, we say when it was true.

THE PRICE LIST
What an MLD session costs at Launch Rehab
MLD appointments use our standard registered massage therapy rates. As of April 1, 2026, and with 5% GST already included: 45 minutes is $120, 60 minutes is $145, 75 minutes is $165, and 90 minutes is $185. The current list always lives on our rates page, which is the source of truth if this page and that one ever disagree.
Which length you need depends on your situation. First visits run longer because they include the health history and assessment. A single swollen ankle needs less time than post-abdominal-surgery care or two-limb lymphedema management. Your therapist recommends a length after the first assessment rather than defaulting you into the longest slot.
There is no separate MLD surcharge and no package you must buy. You pay per session at the massage therapy rate for the time booked, and you can stop at any point.
PRIVATE PLANS
Extended health plans: the massage therapy benefit
If you have extended health coverage through work or a private plan, MLD claims go under the massage therapy benefit, because the provider is an RMT. Insurers do not have a separate lymphatic drainage category. Whatever your plan says about massage therapy per-visit amounts, annual maximums and deductibles applies to MLD unchanged.
Plans differ in three ways that matter: the percentage or dollar amount reimbursed per visit, the annual maximum, and whether a physician's referral is required for reimbursement. None of these are set by us, so the five-minute call to your insurer before the first appointment is genuinely worth it. Ask those three questions and you know your real out-of-pocket cost.
Launch Rehab bills most major insurers directly, including Canada Life, Sun Life, Manulife, Pacific Blue Cross, Green Shield, Desjardins and ClaimSecure, so in most cases you pay only the portion your plan does not cover. Bring your insurance card or plan details to the first visit and the front desk sets it up.
AFTER A CRASH
ICBC: 12 pre-approved RMT sessions in 12 weeks
If your swelling relates to a motor vehicle crash, ICBC's Enhanced Care applies. For the first 12 weeks after a crash, ICBC pre-approves treatments without a referral or prior approval, and its published table (fees dated April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027) includes 12 registered massage therapy sessions, with ICBC paying a standard fee of $107 per treatment and a minimum treatment time of 45 minutes.
Pre-approved does not always mean free. ICBC's standard fee covers part of our rate, and RMT visits carry a small client surcharge, currently in the $7.45 to $7.65 range per session on our rate card, depending on length. You will know the exact amount before you book. Treatment beyond the 12 pre-approved sessions or past 12 weeks needs ICBC's approval for an extension.
To use ICBC coverage, bring your claim number and your Personal Health Number to the first visit, and report the claim to ICBC before treatment starts. We bill ICBC directly. If your crash injuries also need physiotherapy or other care, those have their own pre-approved allocations under the same 12-week window.
PUBLIC COVERAGE
MSP and WorkSafeBC: the honest limits
MSP, BC's public health plan, does not cover massage therapy for most residents. The exception is MSP supplementary benefits: an income-tested program that provides partial payment for massage therapy from approved providers, for people who qualify based on annual net income or membership in specific groups such as recipients of income assistance. The BC government page linked below carries the current eligibility list (last updated June 15, 2026, as of our check).
If you qualify for supplementary benefits, MSP pays a portion of each visit and you pay an adjusted rate. Our rate card lists MSP-adjusted massage prices, currently $97 for 45 minutes and $122 for 60 minutes as of April 1, 2026. Confirm your supplementary benefits status before booking so the front desk bills it correctly.
WorkSafeBC is simpler and blunter: Launch Rehab's RMTs do not treat under WorkSafeBC claims. If your swelling stems from a workplace injury, our WorkSafeBC-registered physiotherapists can treat you under your claim, and physiotherapy may be the right entry point anyway. Call the studio and we will route you to the right discipline rather than the wrong bill.

VALUE
Getting the most out of a budget
MLD is a per-session expense, so the plan matters more than any single visit. The pattern that wastes money is drifting: open-ended weekly sessions with no measure of response. The pattern that works is a defined trial: an assessment, a short run of sessions with a clear target such as reduced limb tightness or garment fit, then an honest review of whether the tissue responded.
Your between-session homework is also a budget tool. Elevation, movement, breathing work and prescribed compression cost nothing and carry the result between appointments. A client who does the homework usually needs fewer paid hours on the table. We would rather you come less often and get more from each visit than the reverse.
Prices on this page were accurate on our rate card as of April 1, 2026, and insurer rules as of the access dates in the sources below. The rates page carries the current numbers if anything has changed since.
BOOK OR ASK
Before you book, check

- Whether your plan wants a physician's referral for reimbursement
- Your ICBC claim number and PHN, if a crash is involved
- Your MSP supplementary benefits status, if income-tested coverage may apply
- Whether your problem is actually a WorkSafeBC claim, which routes to physiotherapy
