BFR GUIDE · COST
What blood flow restriction costs, and who pays for it in BC.
There is no separate BFR fee. You pay for the physiotherapy visit the cuff is used in, and the same insurers that cover physiotherapy cover that visit.

THE SHORT ANSWER
How much does blood flow restriction therapy cost?
At Launch Rehab, blood flow restriction is used inside a physiotherapy appointment and billed at physiotherapy rates, with no separate BFR charge on the rate card as of April 1, 2026. A private initial assessment (60 minutes) is $170, a subsequent visit (30 minutes) is $105, and an extended subsequent visit (60 minutes) is $195. ICBC and WorkSafeBC physiotherapy on an approved claim is no charge to you, MSP-eligible rates are $147 and $82, and most extended health plans cover physiotherapy with direct billing.
The cost question for BFR is simpler than most people expect, because BFR is a technique rather than a service. It is applied by a physiotherapist during a physiotherapy visit, and the visit is what you or your insurer pays for. That means every coverage rule that applies to physiotherapy in BC applies to a session that includes the cuff.
This guide gives our current physiotherapy rates, then walks through each funding route in turn: private pay and extended health, ICBC after a crash, WorkSafeBC after a workplace injury, and MSP supplementary benefits for people who qualify on income. Rates are as of April 1, 2026, and the rates page is the source of truth if this page and it ever disagree.

THE PRINCIPLE
You pay for the physiotherapy visit, not for the cuff
Some clinics list BFR as an add-on with its own fee. Our rate card, effective April 1, 2026, has no such line. The physiotherapy section lists surcharges for two specific techniques, IMS or acupuncture and shockwave, each at $5 on top of a private session, and BFR is not among them. A visit that includes BFR is billed as the physiotherapy visit it is.
That has a practical consequence for insurance. Insurers, ICBC and WorkSafeBC fund physiotherapy visits, and they do not need to know or approve which techniques the physiotherapist used within one. If your plan covers physiotherapy, it covers a visit that includes BFR, subject to the plan's own limits. If ICBC or WorkSafeBC has approved physiotherapy on your claim, that approval covers the visit.
The only thing that changes the price is the length and type of the visit. A first visit is an initial assessment. Later visits are subsequent visits, in a 30-minute or a 60-minute extended form, and your physiotherapist recommends which based on how much needs to happen in the session. A visit with several BFR exercises plus other treatment often suits the extended slot.
PRIVATE PAY
Private rates and extended health plans
Private physiotherapy rates at Launch Rehab, effective April 1, 2026: initial assessment, 60 minutes one-on-one, $170. Subsequent visit, 30 minutes one-on-one, $105. Subsequent extended visit, 60 minutes one-on-one, $195. These are the rates that apply to a BFR session paid privately or through an extended health plan.
Most extended health plans in BC include a physiotherapy benefit, typically as an annual dollar maximum, sometimes with a per-visit cap or a percentage co-pay. We direct bill most major insurers, so in most cases you pay only the portion the plan does not cover at the desk. Check your plan's physiotherapy wording before the first visit: the annual maximum, whether a doctor's referral is required for reimbursement, and whether a per-visit limit applies.
Because BFR sessions are often booked as a block of 2 to 3 visits a week for several weeks, the annual maximum matters more than the per-visit price. A plan with a $500 physiotherapy limit covers a few visits; a plan with a higher limit covers more of the block. Your physiotherapist can plan the mix of BFR visits and home exercise around what your plan realistically funds.
AFTER A CRASH
ICBC: pre-approved physiotherapy covers a BFR visit
If your injury came from a motor vehicle crash in BC, ICBC pre-approves 25 physiotherapy sessions in the first 12 weeks after the crash, with no referral needed. Physiotherapy on an active ICBC claim at Launch Rehab is no charge to you at the standard visit rate. A visit that includes BFR is a physiotherapy visit, so it falls inside that approval.
One qualifier from our clinical facts: specialty services under the ICBC care scope, such as vestibular physiotherapy or IMS, may carry an additional fee, and ICBC coverage for registered massage therapy is limited by the treatment time you request. Neither applies to BFR. BFR is not billed as a specialty service, so no such fee applies to it. If a session combines BFR with a technique that does carry a surcharge, your physiotherapist tells you before the session.
After the first 12 weeks, further physiotherapy needs ICBC's approval based on a treatment plan. Our ICBC physiotherapy hub explains the whole pathway, including what happens when pre-approval ends. Bring your claim number to the first visit and we handle the billing.
AFTER A WORKPLACE INJURY
WorkSafeBC: physiotherapy on an accepted claim
For an injury at work, WorkSafeBC funds physiotherapy on an accepted claim, and physiotherapy on an accepted WorkSafeBC claim at Launch Rehab is no charge to you. Pre-approval is required, and the number and type of visits are set by WorkSafeBC's physiotherapy program rather than by us. A visit that includes BFR is a physiotherapy visit within that program.
BFR suits a lot of workplace injuries where the goal is returning to physical work: a knee or shoulder that cannot yet take heavy loading, or muscle lost during time off. Your physiotherapist reports to WorkSafeBC on your progress in the normal way, and the cuff is one of the tools in the plan rather than a separately reported item.
Our WorkSafeBC physiotherapy hub covers how claims work, what the program funds, and what happens at the end of the approved period. Note that our registered massage therapists do not treat under WorkSafeBC claims, which does not affect physiotherapy or BFR.
MSP
MSP supplementary benefits for people who qualify on income
BC's Medical Services Plan (MSP) contributes toward a limited number of physiotherapy visits per calendar year for people who qualify for supplementary benefits on income. It does not cover the full cost. At Launch Rehab, the MSP-eligible physiotherapy rates as of April 1, 2026 are $147 for an initial assessment, $82 for a 30-minute subsequent visit, and $172 for a 60-minute extended visit, and eligibility must be confirmed before the first visit.
The contribution is fixed and small. As of the provincial page updated June 15, 2026, MSP contributes $23 per visit, with a combined annual limit of 10 visits each calendar year shared across acupuncture, chiropractic, massage therapy, naturopathy, physiotherapy and non-surgical podiatry. Eligibility is based on annual net income, with an adjusted net income threshold under $42,000, plus specific groups such as Income Assistance recipients. Ten visits shared across every practitioner type is easy to use up in a BFR block, so it is worth knowing where you stand at the start.
MSP supplementary benefits generally apply when no other funder covers the visit, so they sit after ICBC or WorkSafeBC rather than alongside them. For someone paying privately who qualifies on income, they reduce the cost of each visit in a BFR block by that $23. Ask the front desk to check your eligibility when you book.

BUDGETING
How many visits a BFR block involves
The 2019 position stand describes standard BFR programming at 2 to 3 sessions a week, or a short daily block of 1 to 3 weeks in clinical settings such as the period straight after surgery. The trials in this hub ran from a few weeks to 14 weeks. How many visits you need depends on your injury, your stage, your response and what else the session has to cover.
Your physiotherapist sets the plan at the assessment and reviews it as you go, and the plan is built around what your funding realistically supports. Where the budget is tight, supervised BFR visits are spaced out and the rest of the program runs at home without the cuff. The rates page carries the current figures, and if this page and the rates page ever differ, the rates page is correct.
