CLINICAL COUNSELLING IN RICHMOND

Why clients in Richmond choose us.

Clinical counselling at our Richmond studio is delivered by two Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCC), Alexandra Cope and Fiona Hu, who between them work in English, Mandarin, and some Japanese. Clients come in for the mental-health side of injury and chronic pain (post-MVA distress, fear of movement, a long recovery that has worn on them), and just as often for anxiety, depression, grief and loss, burnout, and relationship or life-transition challenges that have nothing to do with a physical injury.

Both counsellors work to the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC) code of ethics and hold a master's degree in counselling. Sessions draw on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), trauma-informed and person-centred approaches, EMDR, and mindfulness-informed care, matched to what you bring in rather than a fixed program.

Trilingual coverage across the two Richmond counsellors makes it easier to describe what you're carrying in the language you think in.

"I had a great experience with Adrian. I’ve been dealing with recurring shoulder dislocations, and during my appointment he carefully assessed how my shoulder moves, explained the mechanics behind the problem in a way that was easy to understand, and showed me exactly why it keeps happening. He then guided me through rehabilitation exercises that were tailored to my condition. The entire session was incredibly detailed, patient, and informative. I left with a much better understanding of my shoulder and a clear plan for recovery. Thank you, Adrian, for your professionalism and excellent care. Highly recommend!"

FAQ

Clinical Counselling in Richmond: questions.

Do I need a referral to see a counsellor in Richmond?

+

No. Clinical counselling is direct-access, so you can book without a doctor's referral. A small number of extended health plans require one for reimbursement, worth a quick check with your insurer before your first session.

Is clinical counselling in Richmond covered by insurance?

+

Many extended health plans, including Pacific Blue Cross, Sun Life, Manulife and Canada Life, cover Registered Clinical Counsellor sessions up to your plan limit, though counselling is typically pay-at-time-of-visit with a receipt for you to submit rather than direct billed. ICBC pre-approves counselling for accepted post-MVA claims, and WorkSafeBC approves it case by case.

How much does a clinical counselling session cost at Richmond?

+

A 50-minute session with a Registered Clinical Counsellor is $175, effective April 1, 2026. Full current pricing across every service is listed on our /rates page.

Can I see a Mandarin-speaking counsellor in Richmond?

+

Yes. Fiona Hu is trilingual in English, Mandarin, and some Japanese, and works with clients from a range of cultural backgrounds. You can request her specifically when booking if working in Mandarin matters to you.

What is the difference between a Registered Clinical Counsellor and a psychologist?

+

A Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) holds a master's degree and is a member of the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors. A psychologist holds a doctoral degree, is regulated by the College of Psychologists of British Columbia, and can perform formal psychological assessment and diagnosis, which is outside an RCC's scope. For most talk-therapy work the two overlap; psychological testing is where you need a psychologist specifically.

Is counselling confidential?

+

Yes, within the standard legal exceptions every regulated counsellor discloses at the start of care: risk of imminent harm to yourself or others, abuse of a minor, and a court subpoena. Outside of those, what is said in the room stays there.

How long does counselling take to help?

+

It depends on what you're working on. Some clients feel steadier after a handful of sessions focused on a specific stressor; trauma work, grief, or longer-standing patterns usually take months of weekly or biweekly sessions. Your counsellor will talk through a realistic pace with you rather than promise a fixed number of visits.

Can I book counselling alongside physiotherapy at the Richmond studio?

+

Yes. Counselling and physiotherapy run as separate appointments and separate disciplines, but sharing one studio means your counsellor and physiotherapist can coordinate care when a physical injury and its mental-health impact are tangled together, such as after a motor vehicle accident.
