CLINICAL COUNSELLING IN NEW WESTMINSTER

Why clients in New Westminster choose us.

Clinical counselling at our New Westminster studio, inside Shops at New West above the SkyTrain station, is delivered by Bryn Harris, a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC). Clients come in for the mental-health side of injury and chronic pain (post-MVA distress, fear of movement, the toll of a long recovery), and just as often for anxiety, depression, grief and loss, burnout, and relationship or life-transition challenges unrelated to any physical injury.

Bryn works to the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC) code of ethics and holds a master's degree in counselling. Sessions draw on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), trauma-informed and person-centred approaches, and mindfulness-informed care, matched to what you bring in rather than a fixed program.

Direct SkyTrain access into Shops at New West makes weekly or biweekly sessions easy to keep on a commute, without needing a car.

"I’ve been working with Alex for physiotherapy due to sciatica that flares up when I work. Under his guidance, I’ve been focusing on building strength in my legs, hips, and overall body to support my condition. Alex has a great balance in his approach. He doesn’t over-coddle, but he also never pushes me beyond what my body can handle. Each session feels thoughtfully adjusted to my condition that day, which has helped me build strength with confidence and consistency. I also really appreciate how creative his exercises are. He uses a variety of tools and comes up with different ways to challenge the body, which keeps the sessions engaging and effective. On top of that, he’s very friendly and easy to work with, which makes a big difference when dealing with ongoing pain. I’ve also received dry needling treatments from Alex, and the results have been amazing. After each session, my lower back feels incredibly light and free. I honestly love his dry needling sessions and find them extremely effective. I’m very grateful for Alex’s support and would highly recommend him to anyone dealing with pain or looking for a thoughtful, well-balanced physiotherapist."

FAQ

Clinical Counselling in New Westminster: questions.

Do I need a referral to see a counsellor in New Westminster?

+

No. Clinical counselling is direct-access, so you can book without a doctor's referral. A small number of extended health plans require one for reimbursement, worth a quick check with your insurer before your first session.

Is clinical counselling in New Westminster covered by insurance?

+

Many extended health plans, including Pacific Blue Cross, Sun Life, Manulife and Canada Life, cover Registered Clinical Counsellor sessions up to your plan limit, though counselling is typically pay-at-time-of-visit with a receipt for you to submit rather than direct billed. ICBC pre-approves counselling for accepted post-MVA claims, and WorkSafeBC approves it case by case.

How much does a clinical counselling session cost in New Westminster?

+

A 50-minute session with a Registered Clinical Counsellor is $175, effective April 1, 2026. Full current pricing across every service is listed on our /rates page.

What is the difference between a Registered Clinical Counsellor and a psychologist?

+

A Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) holds a master's degree and is a member of the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors. A psychologist holds a doctoral degree, is regulated by the College of Psychologists of British Columbia, and can perform formal psychological assessment and diagnosis, which is outside an RCC's scope. For most talk-therapy work the two overlap; psychological testing is where you need a psychologist specifically.

Is counselling confidential?

+

Yes, within the standard legal exceptions every regulated counsellor discloses at the start of care: risk of imminent harm to yourself or others, abuse of a minor, and a court subpoena. Outside of those, what is said in the room stays there.

How long does counselling take to help?

+

It depends on what you're working on. Some clients feel steadier after a handful of sessions focused on a specific stressor; trauma work, grief, or longer-standing patterns usually take months of weekly or biweekly sessions. Your counsellor will talk through a realistic pace with you rather than promise a fixed number of visits.

Can I book counselling alongside physiotherapy at the New Westminster studio?

+

Yes. Counselling and physiotherapy run as separate appointments and separate disciplines, but sharing one studio means your counsellor and physiotherapist can coordinate care when a physical injury and its mental-health impact are tangled together, such as after a motor vehicle accident.
